So, in recent years it seems bloody impossible to use Word. Seems to me in the old days, if your computer had Word, you could just use it. But now you need to
set it up somehow, enter product codes that... we simply don't have. I mean the program is pre-installed, but it asks for codes from a CD case, and we
don't have a CD for that program. So we just can't use the program. Mostly I don't worry about this, because I'm perfectly happy using Wordpad.
But my sister had to print off a job application that's in doc format, and I managed to print it from Wordpad. Most of it looks okay, but one page of it
has some text in a grid that's all scrambled and unreadable. So I suppose it would need to be printed from Word. So... can anyone tell me how to get the
damned program to work?

Who set it up? I haven't seem MSWord prinstalled on any computers, usually you have to download it or install it via CD.
The only way I could think of getting it to work would be trying the old installers trick of using all ones (I.e. 1111-1111-1111-1111) which is not permanant, it eventually goes back and asks for a license. The other way would be to hit the MS web site and see If they have licenses you can buy, but I don't think that is your option cause they also want money. |

Well, maybe it wasn't pre-installed. I think links to programs are preinstalled, and when you click on them, they ask you to install the thing. So the CD
is supposed to come with the computer when you buy it. It's not like you pay extra for it, it just comes with the computer, in which case I have no
freakin' idea why they don't just install it at the factor. It's stupid. So anyway, we probably did have the CD at some point, but if so, I have no
idea where it is now.

Have you ever worked with Open Office? It's a free suite of programs that works like Windows' Office Suite. It can open pretty much any Office file,
including Word .docs.

There you go. I haven't tried openoffice; I promised I would never by works again, I would rather buy MS Office first. But Openoffice is supposed to be
pretty awesome.

Eliza, I just went to the URL you provided, and they wanted to charge me for the software.

Try this link: http://www.openoffice.org/product/...though, you have to download each of the
programs separately. I don't know why they are bundling the suite in a "paid" format, but if you scroll to the bottom of that first page it does
say that the software is available free..
***edited to add*** I put Open Office on my daughter's laptop and she does all her school work with it. It's totally compatible with the standard programs used by the schools. |
